The ASU/PACU RN is responsible for the pre-operative and post-operative care of the surgical patient for the department. Multidimensional responsibilities include patient/family teaching and patient care throughout the pre-anesthesia and post-anesthesia recovery phases of care. The registered nurse in ASU/PACU is involved in the assessment, nursing diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of perceived, potential or actual problems associated with anesthesia agents and surgical procedures.
The RN in Pre-op and PACU is involved in the assessment, nursing diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of the patient that is going or has had a surgical or endoscopic procedure. The responsibilities are multidimensional and include patient/family teaching and patient care throughout the pre-anesthesia and post anesthesia recovery phase I and II.
**License / Certifications/ Education**
California Rn License is required
BLS, ACLS and PALS (within 6 months of hire) is required
A Bachelor Degree is hight desired
**Experience / Knowledge / Skills:**
Recent working experience in acute care ASU/PACU highly preferred; critical care background is preferred. Experience and/or training in surgery, patient-family education and diagnostic testing is also helpful. Strong IV therapy skills are preferred.
Effective nursing assessment skills including history, physical, preoperative and psychosocial assessment and medication review. The preoperative/pre-procedure patient has a relative potential for development of postoperative/post-procedure complications, the screening nurse must possess strong case management skills to ensure the best possible patient outcome. Knowledge of pain management and the care and treatment of postoperative complications requiring immediate intervention is desirable. Successful candidates will be skilled in outcomes driven patient management. Application of age specific technique including safety precautions for the infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient is required. Strong skills in thorough patient assessment, both physical and psychosocial; basic 12-lead ECG interpretation, SCH moderate sedation certification within 3 months of hire, interpretation of lab values, hemodynamic analysis, computer and telephone skills, positive communication skills, both written and verbal. Understanding effects of a variety of anesthetic agents and techniques is required.
Promote positive relationships between Sutter Health and the community. Thorough patient preparation and assessment programs require that the nurse be able to teach a variety of self care concepts to the patient and family, requiring efficient and adaptive research and application skills. Knowledge of PCA pain pumps, bair hugger, monitoring equipment (i.e. NIBP, cardiac) respiratory equipment, phlebotomy, 12-lead ECG, O2 sat, IV pump operation, and phlebotomy equipment. Ability to comprehend and follow instructions; ability to perform simple and repetitive tasks; ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to a given work load; ability to perform complex and varied tasks; the ability to get along with co-workers, peers, and patients; the ability to recognize potential hazards and follow appropriate precautions; the ability to understand and remember detailed instructions.
