The Lab Assistant performs and coordinates a variety of clerical, client services, specimen processing, and referral work procedures to ensure quality patient care on adult, pediatric and neonatal populations. The Lab Assistant processes telephone requests, enters patient and specimen requisitions into the computer, and prepares all types of laboratory specimens to ensure proper handling, storage and labeling, distributes or dispatches specimens to correct testing/referral location.
HS Diploma required or equivalent education/experience
At least one year of full-time college (or equivalent credits) with courses in medical terminology or related course work in the medical field or equivalent experience is desired Preferred
Prior clinical lab experience is preferred. Preferred
Prior experience in use of computers or keyboarding is highly desirable. Preferred
Prior specimen processing experience is preferred. Preferred
**Skills and Knowledge**
Knowledge of laboratory operations and client service functions is highly desirable.
Proficiency in laboratory and/or hospital information systems is highly desirable.
Demonstrable ability to professionally handle public contact, confidential information and maintain effective workflow is required.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication and organizational skills are required.
Must have the ability to handle/prioritize multiple phone calls.
Demonstrable ability to perform routine and specialized tasks, recognizing and responding to priorities, and adhering to procedures for processing, handling, faxing and calling procedures.
Must be capable of adapting to rapid changes in both work assignments and environment.
Must be capable of handling inventory concepts and systems.
