OPCoE is looking for an Electro-Optical Systems Architect to join our Active Optical Systems and Architectures group for active sensor products. The active system product team focuses on both systems and components (lasers, receivers, etc) for space and other applications such as tactical remote sensing, free space optical communication, and directed energy weapon systems. This group delivers innovative active systems, along with the corresponding subsystems and components, for defense, aerospace, industrial, and scientific markets. Some of your day to day responsibilities will include:
Working within system development at multiple levels of technical maturity: including new concept formation and analysis, rapid prototype development, and rapid TRL progressions of developed technologies to initial products.
Developing specifications and derived requirements flow-down, the Payload System architecture, ConOp, interface requirements
Leading the requirements development, flow-down and verification events including support for overall test program, data trending program development, as well as risk & opportunity assessments
Interacting with the IPT, CPEs, Subcontract Manager and Program Management to oversee Payload System level actions, and assuring the teams/suppliers understand the requirements and needs of the program.
Supporting and leading system technical reviews - understanding the technical content of design reviews at the Payload and component levels, consult with LM program management, and ensuring successful closure of all action items and design artifacts
Supporting resolution of test failures, hardware anomalies, and providing support to system engineering during critical program achievements
Working with the optical systems and architectures engineering team, and product engineering to ensure successful systems design, development, and integration of active systems & payloads into programs across LM Space.
Collaborating with Line of Business (LOB) Advanced Programs groups, OPCoE Program Development, the Advanced Technology Center (ATC), and established LOB programs.
Our new colleague will have an understanding of Lidar design relative to physical interactions and processes involved, Lidar simulations, and the choices of Lidar type, configuration, arrangement, and hardware and software to meet performance goals (subject, accuracy, precision, and resolution). You will also know first order optics and aberration theories as they relate to Lidar transceiver architectures and associated Lidar fore-optic architectures related to system performance. You can derive customer requirements and translate them into merit functions related to optical designs.
We are seeking someone who is familiar with capabilities of LM Space related to the development, design, fabrication and testing of space-based optical sensors and subsystems. You will be responsible for supporting a core capability of systems engineering and architecture that will enable LM Space to fulfill its mission to be the preferred laser and active systems provider for Lockheed Martin LOBs and our external customers. Ideally, you will have a background in systems engineering for active sensors and payloads, demonstrated ability transition of technology to TRL 6+.
Experience or knowledge of Lidar design
Experience working with multi-disciplinary system development teams, participating with architecture design & development teams
Experience in the build, integration, and test of electro-optical hardware.
Knowledge or understanding of the systems engineering life cycle and processes
Current Top Secret clearance with an investigation in the last 6 years; US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI Clearance
Understanding of Military/DOD design methodology and standards.
Experience with the selection of:
1. What type of Lidar to use
2. Selection of wavelength, bandwidth, and diurnal coverage
3. Laser, frequency control, receiver, detector, and filter
Knowledgeable of applicable Lidar types & hardware; conventional rayleigh, raman Lidar, broadband resonance fluorescence Lidar, narrowband resonance fluorescence Lidar, broadband differential absorption Lidar, narrowband differential absorption Lidar, coherent doppler Lidar, direct-detection Lidar, rayleigh doppler Lidar and high-spectral-resolution Lidar.
Functional experience with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
Demonstrated experience in developing (design, fabrication, assembly, integration and test) high reliability space components or subsystems for high TRL Systems
Experience developing EO instruments/sensors for space or airborne environments
EO/ systems engineering experience in optical sensor development, with hands-on experience in delivering hardware / products.
Prior experiences in LADAR develop and High Energy LASER (Directed Energy) Projects.
Ability to provide product development cost and schedule estimating aligned with FAR guidelines
Awareness of systems engineering analysis tools and techniques, and system modeling tools for active / passive optical payloads
Experience in verification and test planning, management, and execution of AI&T phase elements a plus
Experience with tools such as LabVIEW, MATLAB or Mathematica
Active TS/SCI clearance
